Before the Russian invasion, Italy imported 30 percent of its gas supplies from Russia. In simple terms, we are talking about 30 billion cubic meters (2019 data). After the outbreak of the conflict, the share dropped to 2.9 billion, around 5 percent of annual consumption. However, in 2024 the trend was reversed and Italian imports of Russian natural gas grew by +50.7% compared to the same period in 2023. Therefore this stop to the transit of gas from Ukraine could have consequences on Italians’ bills with significant increases in 2025.
This is certainly yet another blow, yet another cost of the war between Russia and Ukraine that is poured into the pockets of citizens. Without forgetting another primary aspect: the energy turbulence could also have important repercussions on the industry, already dealing with a more marked slowdown than expected.
