Instagram and the new "Post to the past" function, what will change in sharing

The development team of Instagram would be working to implement a new function on the platform capable of finally allowing the millions of users of the famous Meta social network to share backdated posts.

The still unreleased feature, which according to some rumors could be renamed ad hoc “Post to the past“, was spotted by the leaker and reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzziwho in the recent past has often managed to preview some innovations relating to social media on the web when they were still in the development phase.

The reliable leaker shared the image of this new function on X: the option appears in the screenshot “Post to the past” in the list of Instagram sharing choices. Alessandro Paluzzi does not provide any clues about his sources or the possible release times of the functionality, but given that his previews have often proven to be precise, it is to be expected that the platform’s development team has taken seriously the task of allowing social media users the possibility of sharing backdated content, which many have proposed as suggestions over the years.

As anticipated, the Post to the past feature is shown with an icon calendar and it’s right above the Featured Posts option. There is an arrow to the right of this option, which suggests that by clicking on it, you can subsequently select the date to which you wish to backdate the post under consideration. It is not known whether this will be a novelty available only to company profiles or open to all, the only thing that can be assumed is that next to the backdated content the precise date will presumably be indicated in a clear and evident way, so as to avoid unpleasant misunderstandings or, in the most serious cases, legal repercussions.

It should be noted that, still speaking of Meta social networks, Facebook allows you to change the publication date of the contents on the timeline, provided that they have obviously already been uploaded. On the contrary, Instagram does not allow you to share posts, stories and reels with a different date than the actual one, but only to access content shared in the past through the Archive section from the app settings.

Other new features, however, are being launched, such as the ability to edit private messages up to 15 minutes after sending or the “Friend Map” to be aware of the location of your contacts.
