After the many announcements about this tool, Italians will soon have the opportunity to check it out in person how it will work the IT Wallet. After the conclusion of the testing phase, in fact, starting from Wednesday 23 October the app that the government intends to manage citizens’ digital identity will begin to be available to users of the app I. So let’s see when this innovation will really be available, what its impact could be on the lives of Italians and, above all, what the advantages could be.
Progressive rollout until December 5th
Since this is an innovative tool, the conservative approach is reasonable. Instead of risking serious disruptions, IT-Wallet it will be progressively extended for approximately six weeks, until it is available to all citizens who have installed it the app I. From Wednesday 23 October they will be 50,000 users will be able to use the digital wallet immediately: it is assumed that this will be a representative sample of the population, without preferences in terms of age, professions or geography. The timing of rollout announced at the G7 on Technology and Digital in Cernobbio on Tuesday will take place in four phases: on Wednesday 6 November we will go from the first 50,000 to 250,000 citizens, two weeks after the jump to one million users until the definitive opening of the wallet to all citizens on Thursday 5 December.
The Italian digital wallet is similar to Apple or Google wallets but will allow you to carry out transactions with value legal with public administrations and any other third party accessing the service. Instead of risking losing your identity card or driving license, simply register them in IT-Wallet and show them to a public official, keeping the physical documents at the Safe to house. At the time of launch, it will only be possible to include a driving licence, health card and European disability card in the wallet but during 2025 the list will will extend to the identity card, the electoral card, up to personal data certificates, school qualifications, certificates such as the ISEE, electronic health records up to the digital signature.
The government’s desire would be to extend the use of the wallet to public or private transport, shows and so on and so forth. What will make the difference will mainly be the will from the private counterparts to participate in the project.
