After the end of the trial, starting from Wednesday 23 October the first 50,000 Italian citizens will be able to load inside theIO app your documents, so that you can always have them with you and carry out operations with legal value in complete safety. For those who will be part of the first enabled contingent, it remains to understand how to upload their documents into IT-Wallet. Let’s find out how to do it in our mini-guide.
Everything in the Portfolio section
To facilitate the integration of documents within theIO appthe programmers’ choice was to include them in the section previously dedicated to payment systems to be used in relations with the Public Administration. To access the documents, therefore, you will need to enter the Wallet section, the one in which users had so far entered the credit cards or PayPal accounts to be used for the various payments. Once uploaded, the documents will appear as seen in the screenshot below, always accompanied by the words “digital version” to remind you that they are equivalent to paper copies for the legal purposes established by current legislation.

These preview images were illustrated by Gabriele Campagnano, Head of the Press Office of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers at the event held on Monday in Cernobbio and are certainly useful for understanding how to orient yourself. The loading procedure into the system seems simple: just enter theIO app with the Spid or Electronic Identity Card, access the Wallet section and press the “Add to Wallet” button. The system will then provide instructions on how to use your smartphone’s camera to complete the document capture. The first documents that can be loaded are the driving licensethe health card and the European disability card but, during 2025, the list will be further extended, starting from the actual identity card. Once inserted, it will be possible to show the documents during a police check or in public offices, speeding up the verification procedures.

When it will be available to everyone
At the moment, unfortunately, insert your passport inside IT-Wallet it seems impossible: given that it is also used outside the European Union, where there are no systems compatible with the Italian digital wallet, the document would not be readable. In reality within theIO app there has already been a document in digital format for some time, the Tax ID code. Not many users are aware of it but, instead of looking for the health card, it is possible to immediately show the barcode of the tax code, perhaps at the pharmacy at the time of payment to enable a deduction or at the post office. In this case, however, you need to go to another section of the app, the Profile section.

After authentication, simply go to the bottom menu on “Your data”: from here a screen will open showing your name and surname, tax code and email address. By pressing on the word “Show” next to the Tax ID codethe barcode will appear immediately. As already announced a few days ago, the release of theIT-Wallet it will happen progressively over the next six weeks: if by October 23rd there will be 50.
000 citizens will have access to the digital wallet, the number will rise five times on 6 November, to reach one million citizens on the 20th. On 4 December, then, all Italian citizens will be the first in Europe to upload their documents to the ‘IO app.
