After two years of war, Emmanuel Macron change paceUkraine. Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops are in difficulty in the face of attacks by Vladimir Putin’s military, as evidenced by the disastrous fall of Avdiika. Now the French president has raised the tone of the conflict with Moscow, not excluding thehypothesis of a dispatch of Western troops to help the Kiev army. A crazy exit, which risks exasperating an already dramatic situation. These are his words at the end of the summit with European leaders convened at the Elysée: “There is no consensus today to send ground troops… but nothing should be ruled out. We will do everything necessary to ensure that Russia cannot win this war.”
According to the head of the Elysée, the new coalition would be established to supply “medium and long range missiles and bombs” to Ukraine and added: “We are convinced that the defeat of Russia is indispensable for security and stability in Europe ”. Macron’s words were shared by the Transalpine prime minister Gabriel Attal: “Nothing can be ruled out in an ongoing war in the heart of Europe.” But the search for direct confrontation with Moscow was held back by the United States and NATO.
“There are no plans in this regard”, was the first reaction of Washington. The Italian government did not use too many mincing words: “The Conference organized yesterday in Paris by President Macron was an opportunity to reaffirm, with the participation of Deputy Minister Cirielli, Italy’s full commitment to supporting Ukraine in the fight to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity – as stated in the note from Palazzo Chigi – Since the Russian aggression two years ago there has been full cohesion of all the Allies in the support to be offered to Kiev. This support does not include the presence of troops from European states or NATO on Ukrainian territory.” The German Chancellor is on the same wavelength Olaf Scholz: “There will be no ground troops, no soldiers on Ukrainian soil who will be sent there by European states or NATO countries.” This principle will also apply in the future, added Angela Merkel’s heir, recalling that Western soldiers “are not allowed to take an active part in war activities” not even from their countries of origin. Kiev needs weapons, ammunition and air defense, but beware of Europe and NATO sending ground troops. And again the no of the Sweden with the prime minister Ulf Kristersson: “For the moment we are busy sending advanced military equipment to Ukraine (…) France’s tradition is not the same as Sweden’s.”
But Macron’s warlike outburst did not go unnoticed either Russia. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson did not mince words too much: the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine would inevitably lead to a direct military clash between Russia and NATO. “In this case, we must talk not about probability, but about inevitability. This is how we will evaluate”, the words of the diplomat reported by Ria Novosti, underlining that the mere fact of discussing the possibility of “sending some contingents from NATO countries to Ukraine” is a very important new element. He also spoke on the topic Dmitry Medvedev. The former Russian president, now vice president of the Security Council, spoke of “verbal incontinence” on Macron’s part: “Macron’s speech has become a prolonged and painful problem.” The debate is hot, updates will follow.
