The first debate for the challenge took place during the night Home White. Biden inspires tenderness, the last feeling a US president should generate. Trump, with a very solid dialectic, touches the right keys to titillate the average American. The real winner? Sleep.
The entry of Biden and Trump
The incumbent president takes his place in the studio with the same verve that he would have a grandpa Italian when entering the Burraco club after a Sunday lunch with an honest quantity of Lambrusco: hinting at a smile, but with evidently uncertain progress. The tycoon instead enters quickly but confidently, charismatic as always.
- Bye-bye Biden. Disaster at the debate, are the Dems preparing the change in the running?
The first half hour turns out to be quite cordial. The two exchange mutual accusations on the problems of their respective mandates: Trump attacks Biden regarding the fanciful withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan; Biden accuses Trump of the fact that during his presidency the US economy suffered a downturn (forgetting a little thing called Covid19).
The clash over abortion
The debate then turns toabortion and on the annulment (by the Supreme Court) of the “Roe vs Wade” ruling that guaranteed access to abortion in all US states. For Biden it is unacceptable, for Trump (deus ex machina of the conservative current of the Supreme Court), it is instead right to leave the decision on the right to abortion to the individual states.
Then borders, internal economy, unemployment, inflation and other issues that frankly have not managed to generate a debate that is at least enjoyable. A Ping Pong of accusations and nothing more. Probably the eyelid drops also because of the fact that by now Trump And Biden they are respectively at their third and second nominations: we know them very well.
Biden’s foreign policy
Between a “Liar!” and a “Am I a liar? You are a liar!” we arrive at a topic that is certainly more interesting for those who follow the brawl on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean: the foreign policy. Biden emphasizes the importance of NATO and the need to contain Russia. Trump reiterates that Putin’s requests are not acceptable, but maintains that two hundred billion dollars to Ukraine is an insane amount and that it will not help build peace. He also points out that the Russian attack derives from the weakness expressed by the current president and from the fools he has made around the world. In a burst of pride, Joe stops being Sleepy for a moment and accuses Trump of having given Putin carte blanche during his mandate.
Climate change
Then climate change. Biden attacks Trump calling him crazy for leaving the Paris agreements. Donald reminds Biden that it makes no sense to contain emissions if China, India and co. they continue to pollute like there is no tomorrow.
After that, the usual accusations: “They support you neo-nazis!” “Why don’t you take a cognitive test?” “You are a criminal!” “Me a criminal? Maybe you were talking about your son!”. And so on, the debate slides to the closing credits.
At the endthe two greet each other by calling each other the worst presidents in history. Thus ends the first, soporific, debate for the race to the White House.
