In Šibenik, deep in Croatia, you need to elbow your way out to carve out a space of light. Especially if you were born in 1964, when the world is anything but hyperconnected and getting noticed is still a challenge. However, when you have certain genes engraved inside you, destiny is a path that opens up naturally. The segmented ball bounces against the rusty iron and then onto the asphalt of a degraded pitch, one of the many that cover this outskirts of existence. Drazen Petrović He’s not the type to be discouraged. He doesn’t care about context. He is destined for a glorious nickname: “The Mozart of baskets”. He doesn’t have time for everything else.
Talking about Petrović today, about how he revolutionized the game with his vision, creativity and innate talent, also means digging into where the wound still bleeds.
His career began in Yugoslavia, where he soon joined the team Cibona Zagreb. Here, the young talent demonstrated his extraordinary skills right from the start, leading the club to two European titles, in 1985 and 1986. His playing style is like a sheet of music. Elegant, clear, decisive. Not an operetta score. A Wolfgang Amadeus masterpiece. And all the time. Fluid movement, precision passing and an innate sense for the pace of the game. His performances are a mix of technique and creativity and quickly seduce fans and industry experts.
In 1986, Petrović decided to move to Spain, where he played with real Madrid. In this period the basketball player grows further. With Real Madrid he won numerous trophies, including the King’s Cup and the Champions Cup, continuing to show off unattainable qualities. Petrović’s game is not only spectacular, but also highly effective: he quickly becomes one of the best scorers in the league, attracting the attention of scouts and fans.
The pinnacle of his continental career came with his participation in the 1989 European Championshipswhere he led Yugoslavia to victory. His decisive contribution, imbued with sumptuous plays, establishes him as a top player in Europe. However, the American dream is waiting: in 1991 Petrović arrives in the NBAsigning with the Portland Trail Blazers.
In the United States, it initially faces several difficulties. NBA basketball is very different from European basketball, and Petrović has to adapt to a new environment. However, with determination and talent, he manages to carve out his space, demonstrating his value to everyone. With the Blazers, he earns the trust and respect of his teammates and opponents, becoming a point of reference for the team.
After a brief but significant move to Portland, where his playing time was limited, Petrović joined the New Jersey Nets. Here it finally finds its dimension. In the 1992-93 season, he became the team’s leader, averaging over 20 points per game and leading the Nets to a competitive season. His world-class performances make him one of the best shooters in the league, and his fame grows dramatically.
Unfortunately, Drazen Petrović’s talent comes tragically interrupted on 7 June 1993, when he lost his life in a car accident in Germany. His untimely death still leaves an unfillable void in the world of basketball, but his legacy lives on. Petrović is remembered not only as a great basketball player, but as a pioneer who opened the doors of the NBA to many European talents.
