Smartphone charging, everything changes tomorrow: only one type of cable will be legal

At the stroke of December 28th, Europe is preparing to experience a silent but far-reaching transformation in the world of devices electronic: the adoption of the door USB-C as universal standard for battery chargers.

This regulatory innovation, which will embrace a multiplicity of devices such as smartphones, tabletscameras, headphonesportable consoles, e-readersas well as keyboards and mice, was created with the aim of minimizing electronic waste and encouraging more responsible consumer behavior among citizens of the Union. The decision, ratified last October 2022, extends to commonly used devices such as navigation systems and portable speakers, making compliance with this requirement mandatory.

An important element of this reform is its contribution to simplifying the daily lives of consumers by allowing the use of a single charger for a variety of appliances. In addition, standardizing fast charging technology aims to resolve issues related to the use of different chargers to maintain optimal charging performance. In fact, all chargers will be compatible as long as the devices to be recharged work with a power output of up to 100Watt. As for devices with fast charging, they will all have the same speed so you can use the same compatible charger. How will we understand if the new smartphone will also work with the old charging cable and the same charger? There will be dedicated labels.

The implementation of this directive will begin on December 28th for most of the affected devices, postponed to April 28, 2026 for i laptops. This gives manufacturers an adequate period to align with the new provisions, ensuring an orderly transition towards this harmonized technological future.

The positive implications for consumers manifest themselves not only in terms of greater convenience but also in a significant economic savings. The possibility of reusing existing chargers for new devices will reduce the need for additional purchases of new charging accessories, with a saving estimated by the Commission of approximately 250 million euros annually on superfluous chargers. This measure will also contribute to the reduction of approximately 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste per year in the European Union.

An emblematic example of the change underway is represented by the choice of Apple to adopt the USB-C port for its iPhone 15, deviating from the traditional portlightning‘.
