The fifth edition of the competition organized by Diorama Photographic projects returns to the Kasa dei Libri, where the competing volumes will be exhibited from 25 October 2024. Inauguration and awards ceremony Thursday 24 October 2024 at 6pm.

We have reached the fifth edition of The bound imagesan award (this year promoted by Diorama Progetti photographic in collaboration with Kasa dei Libri) which confirms its now important role in the photographic publishing panorama. The Jury, which found itself faced with 55 volumes received, had the opportunity to observe the growing quality of the works proposed, both those created by publishing houses which have sometimes proven to be particularly original and those self-produced which are now increasingly professional. This induced the Jury, composed of Andrea Kerbaker, Monica Fumagalli Iliprandi, Nino Romeo and Roberto Mutti, to indicate two prizes for each of the sections and some special mentions which seemed to be recognition due to the commitment made by authors, publishers, graphic designers, printers.

Winning books in the Publishing Houses section

Ruth Orkin, Bike trip USA, 1939edited by Clément Chéroux, Silvana Editoriale

Martine Franck, A look at othersedited by Clément Chéroux, Silvana Editoriale

For the first time the ex aequo prize is awarded to the same publishing house and the same editor of two volumes which are characterized by the originality of the contents and the quality of the printing. The book that pays homage to Ruth Orkin is rewarded for the refinement of a proposal that ironically alludes to a personal diary, using a style that reproduces that of the author.

Martine Franck’s volume is instead rewarded for its ability to follow the underlying theme of her poetics by not dwelling on individual photographs, but by reconstructing the author’s close relationship with the media for which they are intended.

Special mention to Daniele Tamagni, Style is life (Kehrer) for the ability to coherently evoke the style that animated this young author in a deliberately spectacular volume, which also has the merit of shining the spotlight on the photographer who died prematurely.

Winning books in the self-production and small publishers section

Ilaria Pisciottani, Known images

Chris Boulden (texts) and Angelo Sganzerla (photos), Magic Garden

Although very different, the two awarded volumes are characterized by a particular and refined workmanship, which brings out a great originality of the project.

Ilaria Pisciottani has created a work that approaches the logic of the artist’s book by connecting original elements with other “ancient” ones such as the record, demonstrating on every page the value given to manual work.

The volume by Chris Boulden and Angelo Sganzerla stands out for its different use of photography, with interventions that bring out a great graphic taste, while at the same time maintaining a coherence of language and narrative which is also reflected in the title.

Special mentions to Luciano Rossetti’s volume Side notes noted for the originality of the presentation, the quality of the editorial work and the rigor of the research on jazz; to that of Mick Finch One-Thing-After-Another for the use of modern graphics combined with the use of the image with the screen and for the choice of heterodox images within a very original workmanship; to that of Roberto Rognoni I still surprise myselffor the ability to present the overall work of an author who addresses the most diverse themes with identical coherence.

All the volumes that participated in the competition will be on display at the Kasa dei Libri from 25 October to 8 November; Thursday 24 2024 at 6 pm is scheduled forinauguration with the award ceremony of the winners.

The exhibition is also an opportunity to see high-impact volumes dedicated, for example, to the work of Gabriele Basilico, Francesco Jodice and Brassaïit will be open to visitors from Monday to Friday from 3pm to 7pm.
