Every time a new digital revolution starts, the Bar Sport social discussion begins immediately. There was also no shortage of the IT Wallet app, which is a useful service to avoid having to carry all your documents with you (and perhaps lose them) instead of finally having them on your smartphone. But what is it and how does it work?
IT Wallet is an Italian government project that allows citizens to access various digital services, store personal documents and use credentials to identify themselves securely in public and private services. It is an extension of the idea of the European digital wallet promoted by the European Union, which is in fact now working so that the various applications of the member countries can interoperate. For now, in fact, the documents uploaded to the app have official value only in Italy.
These are the main features:
1. Registration and login
The service can be accessed with the IO app which can be downloaded on iOS and Android and which you must register for. • Access takes place via SPID (Public Digital Identity System) or CIE (Electronic Identity Card) credentials, guaranteeing a high level of security.
2. Document storage
The IT Wallet allows you to:
A) Archive personal documents: in this first phase it is possible to insert your driving licence, health card and European disability card. In 2025, space for identity cards and other digital documents;
B) Manage credentials: Safely store credentials to access online services of the Public Administration and private entities.
3. Services available
A) Digital payments: make payments to the PA, such as fines, taxes, or car tax;
B) Certificates and notifications: request and receive official certificates without physically going to the offices;
C) Simplified access to public services: for example, health reservations, school registrations, or administrative procedures.
Regarding security and privacy, the topic we talked about at the beginning, the app uses advanced encryption technologies to protect user data. Furthermore, all operations are tracked and transparent, and the user has full control over how their information is shared because – and this must be clarified – the application does not save personal data on a server Why everything remains on the user’s device. So, anyone who is afraid of seeing their personal data used by other services should know that the only one who owns it is them. The important thing is not to lose your smartphone.
For the future IT Wallet will be integrated with new functions
such as: the European digital wallet for EU citizens, rapid identity verification to access services even abroad, integrated medical and school certificates. In practice, the wallet’s hours are numbered.
