“We need to be cautious, maybe he’s just a madman and it’s not a religious attack.” This is more or less the usual reaction of progressives when faced with an Islamic attack. Anyone who points the finger at the religious war is immediately referred to as fascist, Nazi, xenophobic and the usual refrain of insults. Then things change when the attacker, still a self-professed leftist, expressed his appreciation for the AfD and Elon Musk on social media. No need for leaden feet, no. We are obviously referring to the events in Magdeburg, where the 50-year-old was on Friday Taleb Al Abdulmohsen he drove his car into the crowd at the Christmas market causing 5 victims and over 230 injuries.
Progressive newspapers and politicians immediately seized the opportunity: have you seen? He is an extremist follower of Musk, Donald Trump’s ally, Meloni’s friend. And so on with the aforementioned refrain. No lead feet, we repeat. But then the results of the investigations by the police emerged, who immediately dismantled the little theater put together by the comrades. The German authorities have increasingly clear evidence that the perpetrator of the attack suffers from a mental disorder.
Citing security sources, the Dpa emphasized the “increasingly confused and radical comments on social media” made by the suspect, who considers himself a fan of Elon Musk and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party but describes himself as politically left-wing. But not only that. This assessment of the Magdeburg attacker is corroborated by the decision to follow the proceedings at the federal state level of Saxony-Anhalt, in particular by the public prosecutor of that region. The Federal Prosecutor, responsible for proceedings relating to state security, i.e. politically motivated crimes, apparently chose not to deal with the case.
The German government will investigate to clarify whether the attack in Magdeburg could have been avoided. As highlighted earlier, the police had received multiple warnings about the creator of the gesture and for this reason the heads of the national secret services, together with the Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser, will be heard by two parliamentary commissions which will begin work in the next few days. Faeser assured that “no stone will be left unturned” to shed light on the information available to the security services. Taleb al-Abdulmohsen had referred to the Boston Marathon bombing as a response to the failure to pass his medical exams in Mecklenburg. And again: thanks to his profile and the four distinct warnings about his danger, Saudi Arabia had previously requested extradition of the Saudi citizen.
The Magdeburg tragedy will be clarified, but at least spare us the usual instrumental controversies: leave Musk and the right alone. You don’t need good taste, just common sense.
