Climate of very high tension between Tel Aviv and Tehran. According to what reported by CBS NewsUS officials would have been informed of the intention of Israel to launch a military operation against it shortly Iran. A news that immediately rekindled concerns to Washington, where the fear of a possible Iranian retaliation against American objectives in the region grows, in particular in Iraq.
Precisely in this context of growing tension, the State Department has ordered the evacuation of the government staff not essential from Iraq, while the Pentagon authorized the family members of the US military to voluntarily leave their offices throughout the Middle East. A defense official confirmed the measures, explaining that it is a precautionary response to the deterioration of regional security.
To confirm the alert climate was the same Donald Trumpintervening in the night by the Kennedy Center: “We are repositioning our staff because the area could soon become dangerous,” said the former president, underlining the growing risks of a military escalation.
The tension is nuclearperfect term. In Vienna, in fact, the AIEA Board of Directors – the International Agency for Atomic Energy – approved a complaint of censorship against Iran, accusing it of not respecting the obligations provided for by the nuclear agreement (JCPOA). The decision could open the way to the restoration of the UN sanctions suspended in 2016, after the signature of the JCPOA, from which Washington, however, unilaterally retired in 2018 under the Trump administration. Tehran rejected the resolution as “politically motivated” and accused the West of applying double standards.
In response, the Iranian authorities have announced new measures: the start of a “in a safe place” enrichment site and the strengthening of centrifuges in Fordow, one of the most sensitive plants in the country. A move that risks further aggravating the crisis and compromising any possibility of understanding. In recent months, five rounds of indirect interviews between the United States and Iran have not been able to reduce the distances. Washington insists in order for Iran to interrupt any form of uranium enrichment on their territory, but Tehran claims the right to continue for civil and medical purposes. The critical point remains the level of purity reached: 60%, well beyond the limit of 3.67% foreseen by the agreement, and close to the 90% threshold necessary for an atomic weapon. AIEA has estimated that Iran already has a sufficient amount of uranium to produce six to nine devices, while specifying that further technical steps would be needed.
Israel, long alarmed by Iranian nuclear ambitions, does not believe the reassurances of Tehran. As highlighted by Repubblica, Prime Minister Netanyahu has been pressing for years for a military action against Iranian nuclear plants. But the Trump administration, while maintaining a hard line, has so far excluded direct intervention.
The road seems traced: Israel remains determined to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capacity. Tehran promises to respond blow by blow. And the United States prepare for every possible scenario.
