There is no relationship between the administration of mRNA vaccines against Sars-Cov-2 and sudden deaths from heart problems in young people. The health agency of the US state of Oregon has disavowed one of the most tenacious conspiracy theories on anti-Covid vaccines, in a research published in the bulletin of the Centers for disease control and prevention (Cdc), the centers for the control and prevention of diseases in the United States.
A fake news, therefore, born from a real concern. In April 2021, in fact, a series of cases of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) post-shield injection were reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (Vaers) – the American national vaccine safety surveillance program, especially among immunized young males. But just a few months later, the safety committee of the EMA (Prac), the European Medicines Agency, made the point by speaking of a “very rare” danger.
Myocarditis and vaccines
As the study conducted in the United States reports, in an initial phase, Covid-19 vaccination was linked to myocarditis in adolescents and young adults, raising concerns about possible cardiac deaths related to the vaccine in this age group. However, subsequent investigations confirmed that “post-vaccination myocarditis is typically mild and associated with good outcomes after a short hospitalization”.
And again, the authors of the scientific publication continue, “no fatal case of myocarditis has been reported in Oregon”. Nonetheless, rumors continue to circulate among anti-vaxers about the link between vaccines and sudden cardiac death in young people. So much so that Matteo Bassetti, director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the San Matteo Polyclinic Hospital in Genoa, rebelled, labeling anti-vaccinationists as “the usual charlatans”.
From data to conclusions
The research thus examined the data on deaths that occurred in Oregon between June 2021 and December 2022 in the 16-30 age group. Overall, 1,292 young adults died in the period considered, and 30 of them from Covid. Of the 40 deaths that occurred in vaccinated people, only 3 had received the vaccine in the three months preceding their death and 2 of them had previous health problems.
These numbers reject any link between vaccination and deaths. In fact, in the same period, as the researchers point out, approximately one million doses of the vaccine were administered in the 16-30 age group in Oregon. “Here is yet another study that demonstrates how vaccination against Covid has nothing to do with the sudden illnesses of young people. It is time to resign ourselves to the fact that the Earth is not flat”, tweeted the virologist Roberto Burioni (who also spoke on case of the illness of the footballer Ndicka).
