The war in Ukraine must not be fueled

Dear Director Feltri, President Meloni possesses political and personal qualities that cannot be discussed. I ask you your opinion on why you declare to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine, instead of trying to find a solution to this damned war together with the EU. In my humble opinion, the will is lacking.

Loris Balboni

Dear Loris, I have never hidden my esteem for Giorgia Meloni, since well before the same voters, who today love her and have faith in her, noticed her moral, human and political virtues and rewarded her proverbial coherence , a very rare gift in politics, an area in which you change your shirt with the same frequency with which you change your underwear. I share every choice and opinion of the Prime Minister, so much so that I myself am amazed by this convergence of views, ideas and values, which make Giorgia my soulmate in an ideological and political sense, it goes without saying. However, regarding the approach to the ongoing war in Ukraine, I cannot help but say once again that it would be appropriate to change the tone. If at first it was necessary to offer support to the attacked State, beyond the evaluation of the reasons that produced this aggression, now, indeed for quite some time now, it is essential to act for peace, given that the conflict has been going on for years and without changes and evolutions taking place at the front, in short, we remain in a condition of permanent stalemate which only generates destruction and deaths. Donald Trump’s victory has given rise to hope, namely that we can finally reach the opening of a dialogue between the parties involved and therefore negotiations. The non-hostile attitude that the new president of the United States has already adopted towards Putin, in fact, makes peace negotiations possible. The disturbing element in all this, i.e. the obstacle, is represented by the president still in office for a few weeks, Joe Biden, who continues to add fuel to the fire that burns in the heart of our Europe. The choice to authorize the use of drones supplied by the USA on Russian territory and that of authorizing the use of anti-personnel mines, which cause victims above all among civilians, especially children, are not the result of intelligence and exacerbate global tension, pushing us on the brink of a world war. Right now, when hopes were growing, Biden is conspicuously contributing to the continuation of military clashes. What goes through the mind of this man, judged by the Democrats themselves not capable of running for president but capable of making decisions that affect the world population, I don’t know and I don’t even care to find out. I believe that President Meloni would do a good and right thing if, in accordance with what will be the new American policy very soon, she condemned Biden’s latest initiatives, also taking into account the fact that Italy has banned anti-personnel mines by adhering to an international agreement. I consider it urgent to reverse our approach to the war in Ukraine: no more weapons, let’s work together for peace, in order to avoid the use of nuclear weapons. Always going after the United States is not simply the result of duties that we assumed after the Second World War, ours is a vice, we always tend to flatten ourselves on American positions, so much so that we don’t even dare to observe them critically and assert our opinion. More courage is needed. Furthermore, I repeat, in a few weeks the American government itself will be working in favor of peace. So why couldn’t Italy anticipate this renewal?

I wouldn’t even give Zelensky chocolates. We gave everything and it was counterproductive for us and for the Ukrainian people themselves, who are fed up with the guerrilla war and are calling for dialogue and negotiation. I would never give the Ukrainian president weapons to use on Russian territory, an action that inevitably constitutes aggression, albeit indirect, on the part of those states that supplied those weapons to Ukraine.

Meloni should distance herself before the others and, as a credible and esteemed leader on a global level, as the skilled diplomat she has revealed herself to be in recent months, be the first to open a privileged way of communication with the Russian president, perhaps in collaboration with Orbán and Trump , who have already taken this direction, initially unofficially.

For Italy it is an unmissable opportunity.
