Your letter is acute, provocative and, let me say, not at all unfounded. The appointment of the new British interior minister, Shabana Mahmood, who sworn on the Koran and has declared that “Islam is what guides it in everything”, it is not an exotic boutade, but a serious symptom of western malaise. Yes, just a malaise, the one that leads European democracies to bow with masochistic zeal to every form of identity as long as it is not the western one.
The West, Mario, has lost pride of himself. We threw centuries of cultural, philosophical, legal conquests in the toilet to make room for religions and traditions which, if applied in their fundamentalist form, are incompatible with our values. The trouble is that, while we are ashamed of our civilization, the others claim their own to tight teeth, sometimes even to upset ours. The left the postmodern one, deconstructionist, disintegram plays with Islam like a child with fire. It is believed to be progressive, but marries the most reactionary causes of the planet: justifies the burqa as a choice, stone as a cultural difference, and jihad as a social rebellion, or rather as a virtuous resistance. And then it is not surprising that the left has become the Trojan horse of the most radical Islam. The Palestinian flags wave in the LGBT Pride, in the anti -fascist processions, in the employed universities. Too bad that in the same places from which those flags come, homosexuals are hanged and the females whipped in public, stone, infibulated, segregate.
You quote Michel Houellebecq. It seems fantasy -like, instead it is chronicle. Political Islam advances not because it is strong, but because we are weak. We handed over his house keys, so as not to be accused of racism. We sold the moral authority to him, in the name of a grotesque and suicidal inclusiveness.
As for consent towards the far right, well, those who sow fanaticism collects radicalism. If a political part stops defending western civilization, someone else will take the task. It is not nostalgia for twenty years, it is simple to survival.
