One hundred new wines every year, without repetitions. It is the rule of the top hundred, the selection edited by Paolo Massobrio and Marco Gatti who has been scandalizing wine Italy for 24 years in search of bottles worthy of stage. The list is presented in Golosaria Milano, the review dedicated to Italian food and wine excellence and curated by the cats and Massobrio themselves, scheduled for November 2 at the Rho-Peer fair, where the official award ceremony will take place.
Since 2002, the year of birth of the recognition, 2,400 wines have been reported. The category of historic tops has also been added since the twentieth year, which allows cellars already awarded in the past to return to the standings with a different wine. “It is an exercise that forces us to search continuously – recalls Gatti – and to see how dynamic Italian wine is.” Massobrio adds that the selection work has influenced the wines cards, especially in Milan, helping restaurateurs overcome the “photocopy lists” in favor of more distinctive labels. “It is as if we had given a tool to restaurateurs to return to make those hosts capable of telling a wine,” comments Massobrio.
The double selection is the result of weekly tastings in the Alessandria headquarters and during the various previews around Italy. The picture that emerges this year sees Piedmont excel with 24 new labels and 19 historic labels, followed by Tuscany (16 news and 8 historic). However, the South stands out, with Campania (6 news and 5
Historic) and above all Calabria (5 news and 7 historic), confirmation of a constant growth of these regions with rich and interesting production but less in the spotlight than the most famous areas.
Next to the Top Hundred, the top of the top are identified every year, that is, the labels deemed better by category. In 2024 the rewarded sparkling wine is the Alta Langa Classic Method Brut “Enrico Cerutti” 2021 of the Cerutti company of Cassinasco (Asti). For whites, recognition goes to Tuscany Orpicchio 2024 of Terre di Romaniana
of Pratovecchio Stia (Arezzo), a rare Tuscan grape variety rediscovered and vinified in amphora. Among the reds the black Malvasia “Mora Mora” 2024 of the Cantina Paolo Leo of San Donaci (Brindisi) is imposed. For the Rosati, the title goes to Valtènesi Riviera del Garda Classico Chiaretto “Rossi” 2024 of Ca ‘Maiol of Desenzano del Garda (Brescia). Among the Passiti emerges the Marsala Virgin reserve “N ° 018 Single Barrel” 2005 of the historic Pellegrino cellar of Marsala (Trapani).
Finally, the outsider of the year is the Tuscan pigment of Vigna “Rosso Porfidio” 2022, created by the sommelier Paolo Porfidio.
The complete list of selected wines – 100 newsties plus 81 historians – is available on ilgolosario.it. In Golosaria Milano, in addition to the award ceremony, the wine will be the protagonist with 100 producers present and another 150 in tasting in the large wine shop of the event.
