Music is about to change. From hairy do-goodism to zero tolerance, Donald Trump he has clear ideas about the dossier migrants. The president-elect long ago announced a significant crackdown, underlining that he wanted to declare a national emergency and use the army to deport millions of irregular migrants. Another move by the tycoon is the abolition of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, which offers temporary protection to around a million immigrants from countries at war or affected by natural disasters. But not only that: among Trump’s projects there is also a scheme that is very reminiscent of the Albania plan developed by Giorgia Meloni.
Trump’s new border czar, Tom Homan, has announced that he is close to finding a state willing to welcome irregular migrants arriving in the United States. A fundamental step in the project that the president-elect defines “the largest deportation in history”. The tycoon’s idea dates back to 2019 and involves the transfer of irregular migrants to third countries. For the moment, the countries involved in the agreement have not been disclosed but recently there has been talk of Turks and Caicos, Bahamas, Panama and Grenada as possible destinations. There was also talk of the Guatemala hypothesis, with an official opening up to the possibility.
Trump made the crackdown on illegal immigration the cornerstone of his election campaign. Homan, a former police officer and current head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Trump’s first term, will play a key role in this project. As the Daily Mail reports, they are three priorities of the president-elect: secure the borders, launch the deportation campaign and hunt down what he said were 300,000 missing undocumented children in the United States.
Homan in a recent interview announced that the military will not round up and arrest immigrants illegally in the country and that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) will move to implement Trump’s plans in a “humane way”: “It will be a well targeted and planned attack conducted by ICE men. The men and women of ICE do this every day. They’re good at this. When we get out there, we’ll know who we’re looking for. We most likely know where they will be and everything will be done humanely.”
In short, the Trump administration will act on multiple levels. But the most interesting aspect concerns the transfer of illegal immigrants to a third country, somewhat in the wake of the Italian government’s plan to transport migrants to Albania, a plan hindered by the left and the judiciary but appreciated by several European countries, so much so push several leaders to start discussions to replicate the system. Great Britain had already tried before with Rwanda, but even in that case it failed to materialize. Now Trump is ready to make a change. Finally…
