War as an anxiolytic
When asked why Donald Trump is raging against Venezuela, retired Colonel Douglas McGregor, a lucid and well-connected analyst, was unable to give a clear answer in his latest interview with Tucker Carlson (here).
McGregor says that, during a recent press conference at the White House, a journalist asked the president if it was true that Nicolás Maduro had contacted him offering oil deals in the form of direct shareholdings. Trump would have replied that Maduro gave him everything. But everything is not enough.
“There’s something more,” McGregor concludes, and Carlson nods.
Oil? Certain.
Russian and Chinese influences? Perhaps.
Immigration? Meh.
Drugs? Nope.
The most plausible hypothesis, according to the colonel’s sources, is the simplest: Trump needs a victory.
After the humiliation at the Alaska summit on August 15 with Vladimir Putin, and the uncertainty in the fragile Middle Eastern truce, does the American president have no choice but to show off his strength against a very weak enemy?
The debate is open.
