There is a Postamat function that many customers may not know about and which has been talked about for a few days in several online newspapers and information sites. It’s keypad “trick” number 9. What can happen after pressing the key? There is no secret code or newly introduced function: it is a Poste Italiane service active since 2021 which still remains useful and, above all, usable today. However, few people know about it and know that it makes withdrawals safe by protecting them from card cloning and avoiding other problems.
What happens when you press the 9 key at the Postamat
The operation allows you to leave the card in your wallet, or even at home. Today, Poste’s financial functions have been concentrated in the Poste Italiane App, after the migration of the previous BancoPosta and Postepay applications. The keypad function number 9 at the Postamat has been active since 2021 and continues to be available today. Poste’s updated documentation expressly explains to “select the 9 key on the ATM keypad to view the QR Code on the screen”. This allows you to withdraw money without using your card or entering your PIN.
The procedure indicated by Poste is this:
- Access the Poste Italiane App and choose “Paperless withdrawal”;
- Press key 9 on the Postamat keypad once;
- A QR code appears on the ATM monitor, which can be scanned with your smartphone;
- From the app you select the card, account or enabled instrument and then the sum to withdraw;
- The operation is authorized with the PosteID Code or, on enabled devices, through biometric recognition. At that point the Postamat dispenses the banknotes.
It is therefore not necessary to physically insert the card into the ATM and it is not necessary to type the relevant PIN on the ATM keypad.
Don’t hold down 9: which cards are enabled
Postepay prepaid and debit cards are enabled for cardless withdrawal via key 9, provided that the instrument is correctly associated and manageable in the Poste Italiane App. In practice, among the cards definitely included are Postepay Standard, Postepay Evolution and Postepay debit cards linked to BancoPosta accounts. The Smart Booklet can also be used to withdraw cash without inserting the Booklet Card. Poste specifies that the function is available for Libretto Smart holders enabled for the transaction functions in the Poste Italiane App.
A clarification is also useful because online the function is sometimes presented as a kind of hidden combination or a secret “trick”. There is no need to hold down the button or carry out particular sequences: the official Poste procedure simply involves selecting button 9, which is used to make the QR code appear. Point.
And it is a possibility that is anything but experimental. In 2021 the service started on the network of around 7 thousand Postamats. At the end of 2025, according to the group’s latest available annual report, the Postamat ATM network had risen to 9,237 devices, 744 more than the previous year.
How much you can withdraw: the cash limit
The limits depend on the product connected to the app and the related contractual conditions. For example, in the conditions currently published by Poste, Postepay Standard allows withdrawals of up to 500 euros per day. Withdrawal from the Postamat ATM, even via the app, costs 1 euro.
For Postepay Evolution, however, the limit indicated by Poste is today 900 euros per day and 3,500 euros per month from bank ATMs or Postamat. Withdrawals made from ATM Postamat are free. For the Postepay debit card connected to the BancoPosta account, Poste indicates free withdrawal from Postamat ATMs, while the limits must be verified in the information sheet of the specific account and can also be customized within the established limits.
The Smart Libretto is still different: the information sheet updated to 19 May 2026 establishes a maximum of 600 euros per day and 2,500 euros per month for withdrawals without a Libretto Card via the Poste Italiane App.
Is cardless withdrawal safe?
In concrete terms, the cardless mode eliminates two steps present in traditional withdrawal: the card is not inserted into the ATM and the card PIN is not entered on the keypad. Authorization instead takes place on the phone via PosteID or biometric authentication. Cardless withdrawal therefore brings the risk of cloning or other problems to zero.
Naturally, the normal precautions against phishing and scams remain valid. Poste expressly reminds that “Poste Italiane and PostePay never ask (…) to provide personal codes” through emails, letters, SMS or phone calls. Any requests for credentials, PosteID or other security codes received outside the official app must therefore be considered suspicious.
In essence, the “secret” of key 9 is much less mysterious than it might seem: it is simply the command prepared by Poste Italiane to start a cardless withdrawal via the QR code. And it has been working for several years.
