"Yes to the impeachment", "he went crazy". What's behind the Trump-Musk dispute

We were so loved. After about a year of close relationships and great harmony, the political relationship between the American president Donald Trump and the entrepreneur Elon Musk has come to a public break. “We had an excellent relationship, but I was disappointed,” said the Tycoon during a press conference in the oval study, next to the German chancellor Friedrich Merz. Musk’s response was not long in coming: in an intervention on X, the CEO of Tesla and Spacex called “ungrateful” Trump, claiming to have been decisive for his electoral victory. I don’t pay, it has relaunched a post that invokes the impeachment of the President, marking a Chiara Cesura between the two.

The clash continued with increasingly heated tones. Musk has insinuated, without providing evidence, that Trump would be mentioned in the so -called “Epastein files”claiming that this would be the reason for the failure to publish some documents. On February 27, the actorney General Pamela Bondi released a first tranche of declassified documents relating to the Jeffrey Epstein case. The documentation, although it officially made public for the first time, contains mostly materials already emerged in previous weddings, but never confirmed or formally published by the US government. The documents do not introduce substantially new elements compared to what has already been known. Among the confirmed information is the presence of the then entrepreneur Trump among the names mentioned in relation to Epstein, the former financier accused of serious sexual crimes and died in prison in circumstances officially considered suicide.

The name of Trump appears in the flight records of Epstein’s private jet, nicknamed by the media “Lolita Express”. According to what reported, the Tycoon would have traveled on the plane on 11 October 1993 and 15 May 1994. In the latter flight, his then wife Marla Maps, daughter Tiffany and a babysitter were also present. The documented routes are from Palm Beach to the Reagan airport in Washington and, subsequently, from Washington to Teterboro airport, in New Jersey. The relations between Trump and Epstein had already been the subject of media attention in the past, as well as some photographs that portray the two together, on some occasions accompanied by Ghislaine Maxwell and Melania Trump. It remains uncertain if the future publications of the documents still reserved will contain further important information. At the moment, the documentation made public confirms already known links, without introducing new decisive elements in case.

The tension had already increased in the previous days, following the items on the exit of Musk by an informal government assignment. The entrepreneur then announced significant industrial decisions, including the suspension of the Spacex Dragon spatial program, crucial for the activities of the International Space Station and NASA. “In light of the president’s declaration on the cancellation of my government contracts, @Spacex will immediately begin to dispose of his Dragon spacecraft” his confirmation on X. The Dragon spacecraft is used for the transport of goods and crews on the International Space Station (ISS). Dragon also has a future with the Red Dragon for the exploration of Mars and the Dragon XL for the logistics of the lunar gateway. He also criticized the “Big Beautiful Bill”, the spending law under discussion at the congress, suggesting that it will involve negative effects on the economy, as a possible recession by the end of the year.

Trump said he had removed Musk from any assignment, describing it as “unstable” in its reactions. The idyll between the two, who had seen a close collaboration between a president in favor of an increasingly centralized vision of power and an entrepreneur with direct interests in many federal initiatives, seems to have definitively concluded. Trump also threatened to review or cancel the important federal contracts in place with Musk companies. One of the triggering elements of the rupture seems to have been the discussion on the “Big Beautiful Bill”. According to Trump, Musk knew the details, accusation rejected by Musk himself, who called this reconstruction “false”, underlining that the law was hastily approved and without a real examination.

Although in the past Trump had paid homage to Musk with a symbolic “passepartout” for the White House and had involved him in strategic roles, the voltage Between the two he had been palpable for some time. Musk, through X, reiterated its importance in republican victory and criticized the administration for the elimination of incentives for electric cars and for the failure to appoint a candidate at the helm of NASA. And again, in a further provocation, Musk has launched a survey to test the interest of the public towards the creation of a new political party that can represent a transversal majority of the American electorate. The question quickly obtained hundreds of thousands of responses, with a large majority in favor.

  • Musk also reiterated it: now enough with public spending

The link between Musk and Trump began after the entrepreneur’s acquisition of Twitter, culminating in an explicit endorsement in favor of Trump after the attack in Pennsylvania to the Republican candidate. Musk contributed with huge donations to the Tycoon campaign and received a key role in return to containing public spending through a special federal department. The rift was probably welcomed by enthusiasm from Steve Bannonformer Trump strategist and among the most heated critics of Musk. As reported by the New York Post, Bannon said he advised the president to cancel all contracts with the patron of Tesla and to start several investigations on him: “They should start a formal investigation into his immigration status, because I am strongly convinced that he is an illegal immigrant and should be immediately deported by the country”. And again, Bannon said that the Trump administration should investigate Musk’s use of drugs and its attempt to obtain a briefing ranked on China by the Pentagon.
