Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group) continues its path to renew its high-speed fleet. A new contract has been signed with Hitachi Rail for the construction and supply of nine new generation Frecciarossa trains. The investment, worth approximately 260 million euros, marks a further step forward in the FS Group’s Strategic Plan, which aims to offer an increasingly modern, innovative and sustainable service.
An ambitious plan for the future of high speed
The agreement is added to the one signed in 2023, which provided for the supply of 36 trains, to which were added 10 further trains already acquired through options. The objective is ambitious: by 2031, the Frecciarossa fleet will have a total of 74 new trains.
2027 will be the year with the highest number of supplies, equal to 16 trains, and will include the first convoy of the new batch, scheduled for July. From 2029, with the addition of a further 2 deliveries, there will be 57 new trains in circulation.
Latest generation Frecciarossa: technology, comfort and sustainability
The latest generation Frecciarossas, made in Hitachi Rail’s Italian factories in Naples and Pistoia, represent Italian technological and stylistic excellence in high speed. Designed to run not only in Italy but on seven European railway networks, these trains offer maximum performance, comfort and safety.
Here are some of the main features of the new Frecciarossa:
- Speed: They reach a maximum speed of 300 kilometers per hour, with approval of up to 360.
- Energy efficiency: Equipped with advanced traction systems that improve efficiency.
- Sustainability: They boast a recyclability rate of 97.1% and a material recovery of 98.2%, thanks also to newly developed electric motors.
- Comfort and accessibility: Spaces designed to ensure usability even for people with reduced mobility.
- Design and innovation: Interiors by Giugiaro Design and new on-board instruments in the name of Made in Italy style.
- Digitalisation: Platforms can benefit from Hitachi Rail’s Hmax digital suite, a Digital Asset Management system that allows you to process data in real time to optimize traffic, maintenance and energy consumption.
A step forward for rail mobility in Italy and Europe
“With this investment, Trenitalia takes a further step in strengthening its high-speed fleet, consolidating Frecciarossa’s position as a point of reference for rail transport in Europe”, declared Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and General Manager of Trenitalia. “More efficient, more sustainable trains designed to meet the expectations of travellers: this is the direction in which we continue to invest, in Italy and on international markets, to build an increasingly modern, integrated and future-oriented mobility system”.
“This new contract confirms and strengthens the historic collaboration between Hitachi Rail and Trenitalia, continuing along a path that, over the years, has revolutionized the travel habits of citizens in Italy and Europe”, commented Luca D’Aquila, COO Hitachi Rail Group and President of Hitachi Rail in Italy. “The latest generation model was designed with the aim of offering passengers a better travel experience, guaranteeing more comfort and at the same time reducing environmental impact. It is a train that looks to the future of Europe, towards an increasingly integrated high-speed system”.
With this new agreement, Trenitalia and Hitachi Rail confirm their commitment to the development of increasingly modern, sustainable and competitive railway mobility, helping to redefine the standards of high-speed rail transport in Italy and Europe.
