World War II bomb explodes under a house: it's a massacre

A sudden roar, a ball of fire that pierces the sky and then silence, interrupted only by screams. A World War II bomb, which had remained buried and silent for over eighty years, suddenly exploded in a fishing village in Indonesia. The toll is dramatic: at least 5 dead, almost 20 injured and an entire neighborhood obliterated.

Hell has broken loose in the remote region of Papua. The bomb was located under one of those typical houses on stilts that overlook the water. According to initial reconstructions by the local police, the detonation was extremely violent: after the explosion, a dense column of black smoke visible from kilometers away rose up.

It is suspected that the detonation was triggered by a resident’s clumsy attempt to extract explosives to make a fish bomb. However, unfortunately, that high-explosive mortar turned out to still be active, immediately triggering a massive explosion that leveled the area.

The violence of the shock wave literally pulverized nine homes. At the moment the death toll is provisional: in addition to the five bodies recovered and the twenty injured people rushed to hospital, rescuers are digging through the rubble and mud in search of at least three people who are still missing.

This tragic event raises a huge and often forgotten problem: war remnants. During the 1940s, Indonesia (then called the Dutch East Indies) was one of the most violent theaters of conflict in the Pacific. Japanese forces had occupied the area, and the Allies launched a massive counteroffensive to retake it, dropping tons of bombs. Many of those devices never exploded, ending up swallowed by the forest or the mud on the coast. Today, almost a century later, those “ghost bombs” continue to kill.
