Announcement of Google for its Android users: soon one of the versions of the operating system launched by the Mountain View giant will no longer see updates uploaded to the Google Play Services platform. Like many of its predecessors, in fact, the system has become obsolete and will be discontinued. Those who still use it, therefore, will have to act accordingly: above all to avoid running into security problems.
Goodbye to Android 5 Lollipop
The operating system is retiring Android 5 “Lollipop”. Android is an operating system developed by Google for mobile devices and like many other programs it is regularly improved through updates. However, when a version reaches the point of being obsolete, these are no longer released and the next operating system is moved on. In reality, at this point, there should be few devices left that still have Android 5 “Lollipop”, but Google still wanted to warn users, so as to allow them to act in time. The risk, in fact, is that, once the updates are finished Updatesflaws could be created, with obvious risks to the security of the devices.
Launched in 2014, Android 5.0 was the first, in 2015, to feature Material Design. Last year it was Android 4.0’s turn. Now it will be version number 5 of the operating system with the iconic green robot that will retire. Updates will still be guaranteed for Android 6.0. Google has decided to stop releasing updates for Android 5 since only a few users are using it, we’re talking about 1%. Once it is no longer updated, the operating system will no longer be able to guarantee devices the new features, nor those updates of safety really essential for the protection of devices and the data contained therein. Not only that. There could even be problems with some applications.
What to do
If you have a tablet or smartphone with Android 5, don’t panic. The devices will not stop working after the updates are interrupted. However, they will not have new features available, and there will be no more security updates.
If the device in question contains important passwords, is connected to the network, and is perhaps used for work, the advice is to change the access keys or
replace it with a new device with an updated operating system. You can also choose to continue using the tablet or smartphone, but without connecting it to Internetso as not to run into danger.
