Thanks to Leonardo, the Lombardy region is among the few in the world to today boast a complete capacity in the development of aeronautical programs, as well as advanced skills in the space, security and defense fields. 12% of the entire hi-tech industry in the region is today represented by Leonardo’s supply chain and Lombardy is the region in which the value of investments in the company’s Research & Development activities is greatest, almost 10% alone of the regional total.
Leonardo in Lombardy is today the legacy and direct expression of a continuous ability to innovate in the territory since the early 1900s. Varese, which has always been “the Province with Wings”, is the place where historically aircraft and helicopters are produced which continue to make history of the Italian aeronautical industry in the world.
Nerviano (Milan) is home to world-leading space, radar, electro-optical and security technologies. Critical communications solutions made in Nerviano recently supported the 2024 Ski World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo from 26 to 28 January. Robotic systems, atomic clocks, solar panels and power units equip the most challenging international space missions, carried out in one of the first company factories to have embraced Leonardo’s digital transformation model of production “Factory of the Future”, a new integrated industrial approach consisting of a heterogeneous set of innovative digital technologies distributed along the value chain. An important result rewards Lombard excellence in the space sector: Milan will host the 75th edition of the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) from 14 to 18 October 2024, the most important global event in the sector. A candidacy strongly supported by Leonardo, which increasingly looks to Space as a fundamental environment for its strategic development.
