Milan is a driving force for Lombardy tourism with over 31 thousand businesses and 200 thousand employees
Lombardy Style Project: Lombardy Region and Chamber of Commerce of Milan Monza Brianza Lodi today presented to companies in the tourism sector the opportunities and policies they intend to develop in favor of the economic fabric of the territory, also in view of the appointment with the 2026 Olympics The excellences of Milan but also of every single Lombardy territory are now collected in a brochure that tells the story of Lombardy’s many tourisms.
Milan leads the Lombardy tourist economy. In 2024 the tourism system, which ranges from transport activities to the organization of events, has over 31,000 active businesses in Milan alone (around 37,000 in the overall area of Milan, Monza Brianza and Lodi), 41% of the Lombard total, and it employs over 200 thousand workers, more than half of the entire region. Milan also confirms its international vocation with imports and exports that in 2023 are worth respectively 14% and 9% of the national total and its attractiveness with the presence of almost 5 thousand companies with foreign participation, 30% Italian. It emerges from a processing by the Studies, Programming and Statistics office of the Chamber of Commerce of Milan Monza Brianza Lodi on data from the business register, Istat and the Reprint database.
“Today the challenge is to retain the international tourist who arrives and stays in Milan in Lombardy, offering them an attractive tourist offer within our territory – he has declared: Barbara MazzaliCouncilor for Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Fashion of the Lombardy Region -. Milan has always been a ‘champion’ of tourism, the leading province for stays, a ‘brand’ with strong global appeal. There is no international tourist who does not pass through Milan; but our goal must be to be able to tell, with skill, the wonders that can welcome tourists in an ‘outside Milan’; to discover and experience an area rich in beauty. The ‘Lombardia Style’ territorial marketing project was born precisely from the need for a new narrative of our territory, made up of creativity, mastery in production, tradition and innovation, art, delicious food and incredible landscapes. The tourist can quickly move from the cosmopolitan reality of Milan to a cycle path on the banks of a lake or a river. A territory of which Milan is an exceptional showcase.”
He has declared: Massimo Dal CheccoVice President of the Milan Monza Brianza Lodi Chamber of Commerce: “Milan’s growing international attractiveness – driven by sectors of excellence such as fashion, design and culture – has always been based on a broad and diversified entrepreneurial supply chain. A local heritage that the Chamber of Commerce enhances and promotes with targeted projects, direct investments and monitoring tools. Thanks to these and other initiatives, Milan will certainly be able to put itself at the service of the wider regional territory, positioning itself as a gateway and advanced point of an excellent tourist offer and working together on shared objectives, with a view to sustainability, also in view of the Olympics and Paralympics 2026”.
