Transition to the new digital terrestrial, how to understand if it is necessary to change TV

The date of September 2024 is approaching, the deadline by which the transition to will take place new digital terrestrial, DVB-T2. It has been a rather long journey, and not always simple, however it seems that change is imminent and by then it is necessary to be prepared. Many Italians do not yet have a television compatible with the new technology, which is why in recent months there could be a rush to get it up to speed.

What will happen in September

As we said, the path to arriving at the new digital was quite long, also to give citizens time to adapt. It started in 2021, with the transition of national broadcasts to coding MPEG-4, which began broadcasting high definition channels. The definitive transition to the new digital terrestrial should have taken place in June 2022 but, considering that few had managed to get up to speed with the devices, the deadline was moved to 2023 and then to 2024. Next September, therefore, barring further delays , should be the definitive date.

TO September 2024 all channels should be broadcast with the new DVB-T2. It should be noted, however, that the channels belonging to national public television, i.e. Rai 1, Rai 2 and Rai 3, will be broadcast both with traditional digital terrestrial (DVB-T standard) and with DVB-T2.

What happens with DVB-T2

The DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting – 2nd Generation Terrestrial) is the new digital terrestrial. This is a second generation technology capable of guaranteeing more efficient management of the available frequencies, with a consequent improvement in the quality of the service provided to citizens with regards to the quality of the offer and of the video, both 4k and 8k.

Unfortunately, however, not all TVs are compatible with the new digital, and some channels, with i old televisions, they may not see each other. According to the most recent data processed by Auditel Censis, 47% of devices do not support DVB-T2. In practice, 8.4 million families would no longer watch the channels.

When to change your TV

So do we need to change the TV set? To understand this, it is possible to do a test, so as to verify the situation of our device. To find out whether or not your television supports the new technology, simply enter the main menu and select the “Digital tuner” item. If the wording is present DVB-T2 HEVC/H265our TV is compatible and does not necessarily need to be replaced.

If the wording is not present, then a change of device is truly inevitable. In this case we can purchase a smart TV, which will allow us to access all the services, or opt for the cheaper solution of a decoder for digital terrestrial DVB-T2.
