Dear Director Feltri,
It seems that Giorgia Meloni does not hit one for the left. Even the trip to Washington was described as a failure and a break in united Europe. In my opinion, however, Meloni has shown balance and not wanting to climb over European institutions. Is Meloni’s behavior really judged very severely outside of Italy? Or maybe it is true the opposite, that is, that this premier here envies it to us?
Davide de Salvo
Dear Davide,
Giorgia Meloni enjoys a growing international prestige who pours and reverberates on Italy and the Italian people, being considered an ally and reliable and honest interlocutor. Even in Europe the esteem for him has increased, both by the European peoples and by his homologous. She is a woman who gets respected. A few chat and many concrete facts. With the trip to Washington I would say that his authority is at the historic highs and I am sure he will follow to rise. Increased by the Italian press who spoke of fascism about this executive and the Meloni party, the European media have long considered the leader of Fratelli d’Italia as a dangerous extremist who would restore the dictatorship in Italy. Then they realized that this narrative was false, functional to discredit a strong and feared political opponent. Meloni has, blow after blow, demolished any prejudice towards him. As a leader of the conservatives, he distinguished himself, but even more as a premier of a Member State that has been treated for too long and agreed to be treated as a tail light in the old continent as elsewhere. And I will laugh when a left exponent, the left one who has always lowered his head and obeyed, Nicola Fratoianni, defines Meloni as “Trump’s waitress”, because it is quite the opposite. Meloni expressed the dignity and pride of Italy, a nation that is now the protagonist. And our European neighbors note what is stubbornly denied by the Italian left. In this regard, an editorial published in a French economic newspaper, Les Echos, signed by Arnaud Le Gal, who enhances the skills of our Prime Minister, specifying that the other European leaders should take it as a model, to inspire, to follow, to follow it actions, behaviors and choices, at least in order not to stay behind, is interesting. As for the tour in the USA, the French editorialist underlines how Meloni has built a real “link with the United States intended to upset the European established order”. But not in a negative or catastrophic sense. The Gal writes that Meloni, in the eyes of Trump and his deputy, “has proven to be a more respectable ally than Victor Orbán among the centrifugal forces of the 27, because he knows how to grasp the neighbors by surprise without breaking too many taboos. As when he recalls that he cannot negotiate on behalf of the EU, to play his cards better and establish himself as an intermediary number one between Washington and Brussels ». The Mattei Plan is praised, defined as a sort of pernacchia to Macron, but above all Meloni is called “extremist of Realpolitik”, “precious resource”, also for the indispensable interlocution between the USA and the EU.
This is how they look at us outside our borders: with admiration. And it hadn’t happened for too long. Maybe millennia.
Because yes, Italy is beautiful, in Italy we eat well, Italian products are of quality, Made in Italy has no equal, but Italy had never yet distinguished itself as a power that can weave, define and mend international relationships of decisive importance.
Thanks, Giorgia.
