For months they thought they were expecting triplets, an already unusual case, only to then discover something even more surprising: there were actually four children. The incredible case comes from Western Australia, where a 45-year-old woman, Belinda Lotsu, gave birth to a boy and three girls, all in excellent health.
The quadruplets born in Australia
The birth took place last week at the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth. According to health records, the four newborns, named Amy, Amana, Amber and Amon, are the fifteenth set of quadruplets born in Western Australia and the first since 2020. As confirmed by their father, Emmanuel Lotsu, the woman had undergone in vitro fertilization treatment and was convinced she was only expecting triplets. The presence of the fourth child was discovered only after halfway through the pregnancy: “We were amazed and surprised.”
The couple, together with their three-year-old son, have lived in the regional town of Kalgoorlie for two years, after emigrating from Ghana. The four newborns are currently being treated in specialized neonatal departments. According to what the couple told the Australian media, they will all be able to return home in a few weeks.
As explained by Jourdin Ross, nursing and midwife coordinator at the hospital, in births like this it is essential to plan everything, even emergency scenarios, to successfully complete such a complex pregnancy: “In addition to clinical care, the hospital offered complete support to the family. It is important to guarantee compassion, dignity and continuity of care during an extraordinary and stressful experience.”
