Le Pen, Georgescu, the EU threat to "cancel everything": democracy at risk?

Heavy clouds thicken on the political fate of Marine Le Pen. As we well know for the leader of the Rassemblement National, three times candidate defeated in the Elysée, the most feared nightmare becomes reality: the Paris court sentenced her to five years of ineligibilitywith immediate effect, compromising his candidacy for the presidency. A vote for which the polls gave it favored at least in the first round. “A political sentence”, commented the leader of the RN, a judgment shared by many, also because as we explained the judge there could avoid the ineligibility of the Le Pen, but wanted to stop it.

There are many reflections that can be done, one of these is linked to time justice. A great classic of Italian and non -Italian politics. Just think of the controversy in the United States in the months before the presidential elections, then won by Donald Trump. A rather recent case that many have combined with the pen holder is the one recorded in Romaniahero Calin Georgescuthe candidate for the presidency excluded by decision of the Romanian Constitutional Court. The accusation? External influences. Russia. In a nutshell, having received money from Moscow.

A first link between Le Pen and Georgescu is visible to the naked eye: opposition political leaders considered very favored in the elections. The Romanian was ahead in the first round, before seeing the results of the vote canceled and having to deal with six charges: instigation to actions against the constitutional order, communication of false information, false financial statements in continuous form, promotion in public of the cult of people guilty of genocide crimes and war crimes, constitution or support to a fascist, racist, xenophobic organization, anti -Semitic. The RN leader has not yet participated in any electoral round, but the polls are crystal clear: it was attributed around 36 percent. In short, to the presidentials he could have played the role of the protagonist after three empty attempts. Another possible link between the two is skepticism towards “willing” and the priority to negotiations on Ukraine.

  • What does not return to the sentence on Le Pen
  • “You can’t rejoice.” Meloni and the sentence that crosses the pen
  • The ineligible pen, should democracy defend from the judges?

And there is more. The cases of Georgescu and Le Pen bring to mind the words of Thierry Breton a few months ago, in January to be precise. On that occasion, the former EU commissioner for internal markets and services launched an explicit threat in view of the elections in Germany. “If they do not respect the law – the reference to X – there will be fines. And if they continue not to respect it, the law also provides for the possibility of a ban”. Disinformation inextricably linked to the elections in Bucharest and here is the intimidation: “We apply our laws in Europe when there is a risk of being circumvented. We have done it in Romania, and if necessary we will have to do it also in Germany”. A clear reference toAFD and the hypothesis of a success at the Weidel party polls. Problem solved by the usual grant between those who until the day before were made war to the sound of insults.

The thought of many is as follows: if those who win or risk winning an election is not deployed on the right side, can it be removed from the middle? The theory of strong powersin essence. The material is there, these disqualifications at least suspected. But there is also another aspect to consider. These interventions with the judges of the judges seem to push the voters to support with even more force certain choices: the first polls in France smile in RN and the young Delfino Bardella. The example comes once again from the United States, where Trump was disfigured Kamala Harris’ weak competition.
