“Put the shopping in place,” and the shopping is arranged on the kitchen table. At this point the two domestic collaborators examine every single product and begin to place it in its place: one opens the fridge, the other one drawer. The point is that they are not two people but two Humanoid robots. Not only that, but they collaborate with each other, exchanging information. This is what you see in the last video that has now become viral of figures, which already last year presented the demo of one of his humanoids on which he had been installed Openai (now they have detached themselves from the Altman company).
Helix, this is the name of the new robot, is designed specifically for duties. Maybe they may seem a little slow, but we are only at the beginning, and think about what they are doing alone. They respond to the instructions given simply to speak to them, analyze the environment, communicate to each other, and act recognizing and manipulating objects never known before. All this in a house, which is not exactly the ideal environment in which to make a robot work (unlike a factory, where robots have been used for years also to build cars, for example, but the actions and movements are more standardized).
For heaven’s sake, what we see in the demo must always be taken with the (non -robotic) pliers. Even when we see performance of mortal jumps we don’t know how many times the robot ended up lying long on the floor. It is like seeing the definitive recovery. Figures, however, as a young startup, is taking ahead on an unhappy road (and which promises well also thinking about possible developments for help to disabled people), and with the acceleration of AI we will witness a faster progress of domestic robotics. Costs? High for now, but they will drop, as has always been for technological innovations.
In short, there are those who are afraid of technology (the naturalists, primitivists, traumatized by Terminator and Matrix), and those who like me can’t wait to be able to say: “Helix, bring me a coffee, redo the bed and bring me the robot dog, thanks”.
