The Songkran Festival in Thailand, April 13-15
The Songkran Festival is one of the most important events marking the Thai New Year. During this celebration, the entire nation is full of excitement and joy as the people pour buckets of water over each other, spray each other with water guns and aim hoses at one another.
The festival is a symbol of welcoming the new year and the spring rains to begin planting their crops. Part of this tradition is “bathing the Buddha image,” an important religious ritual where the devout Buddhists pour fragrant water over Buddha statues at home and at the temple. This is also a time to spend with the family and be reunited with your loved ones.
Though the celebration varies among cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya, the highlights of the festival includes enjoying music from large music festivals, attending parades and learning the culture and history of Thailand.
Be sure to check out the website to get more information and learn how to not get arrested while in a foreign country (A British Man was arrested for removing his shirt during the 2016 Songkran Celebration — don’t be that guy).
